Accesorize with socks!

Are you one of those people who think that socks are only for your feet?  In modern times, the availability of a vast variety of sock yarns has put socks everywhere. I have seen people make Sockhead hats, Sock Arms sweaters, sock book markers as well as sock garland. But, would you be surprised to hear about  sock jewelry. Well, if you have been around a while, it will not surprise you to discover that I have joined my recently acquired admiration for sock making with my love for jewelry.

My new venture into making sock jewelry requires a short story... At the beginning of the year, Fay, who is the host of the Crochet Circle Podcast, expressed her desire to hold a Sockalong (lingo in the crochet/knitting community for an event in which makers world wide can meet up, virtually, and make socks "together".) The event is set to start on September 29th and those of us who have chosen to participate are surrounded in a cloud of excitement.

For example, Tamara, from the Craftyescapism Blog has accepted to organize a blog hop for the Sockalong. If you have never heard of this, a blog hop is when a group of bloggers join forces to publish posts on different aspects of a certain topic. The different posts on the different blogs are linked so that, followers can easily "hop" from one blog to the next, ultimately reading all the related articles. Well, in our case, we are going to write about sock making. I am so excited to have been invited to join this blog hop and my post is scheduled for September 29th, right here, on this blog!

The excitement created by this Sockalong lead me to explore a whole different aspect of crafting: pattern writing. When my  youngest daughter left the nest back in February, I decided to sulk in my misery by creating a pair of socks  that would always remind me of her, and so my Always socks came to be.

My Always Socks
These socks were crocheted with a 3.25 mm hook using a fingering weight yarn that was 80% Bluefaced Leicester and 20% Nylon. This colorway is "Something wicked this way comes" by Kay of the Bakery Bears (Yes. That's two Harry Potter references in one sock, in case you are still scratching your head.). These are full length socks with a wedge toe, a short row heel, a cupcake pattern design on the leg and a knitted cuff.

The Always socks set the groundwork for writing a sock pattern that even a novice sock maker could follow. I started early on, in February, because I wanted the pattern to be ready and tested for the  Sockalong. Well, low and behold, the job is complete and My Sweet Socks pattern is now published both on this blog (here) and on my Ravelry page.  The pattern includes instructions for making my the original Always socks as well as instructions for modifying the pattern to create shorty socks, create the cupcake pattern in contrasting colors or alter the type of cuff.

But my muse didn't stop there. It convinced me that I could make a miniature sock using parts of the full sock pattern. At the time, I didn't know what you would use a miniature sock for... but since it has occurred to me that you could make keychains, Christmas ornaments or …. or maybe sock jewelry!!!  And from my inspiration, look what was born!

Sorry about the Christmas in September bombing in the next one, but I'm a Christmas-all-year-round kind of girl. You can find the free pattern for this mini sock, here. Happy crafting!!

That was really cute. I have seen some of this before in my workouts. I thought that it was really a thing for babies. I never thought that knitted socks can be an accessory in bags and other things. People nowadays are really creative and they tend to do things like this. It is iconic and fashionable at the same time. This incoming season is going to be more windy and cold, having socks like this would really be useful.

    About me:
    Caroline Rodriguez

Many years ago I discovered that there was a crafty side to me. Since then, there have even been times when I have considered taking up crafting as a full time job. But, I guess that is something I have heard most people who practice some craft say.  Someday... one day... Until then...  I guess I'll just blog about it. Thanks for being part of the crafty side of my life!
