Just a stretch of imagination

This June I began an adventure to try and replicate Hermione's beaded bag that appears in the Deathly Hallows of the Harry Potter series (7th book). Actually, if you are a Harry Potter fan you know that in the book, her bag is described as small enough to fit in her sock, but the film presents a larger version and that is the one I tried to recreate using crochet.

My plan was to make triangular sections in shades of purple (because I will always associate the color purple with Hermione), join the triangles, add beading, lining and a drawstring and voila! Let the magic take place. Well, as always, it was easier said than done.

I started my project on June 2nd.  It took me over 2 weeks to get the triangles made and slip-stitched together. I then added a rippled border and began the beading design.

Next I needed to add some support to the bottom and cover up the point where the triangles met. At this stage, I also decided to block my work to get a nicely shaped circle and a better idea of the dimensions my completed bag would have.

After blocking, I stepped back and took a good look at what I had accomplished so far. It was then that I  realized that  I wasn't satisfied with the outside design, so, I added more beading.

Lining and a drawstring was all I needed to complete the bag. I chose to line the bag in a soft gold colored fabric with a lot of drape. I made the lining a little bit bigger than the actual bag because crochet can stretch. I chose a black cotton woven chord for the draw string only because, in the movie, the drawstring appears to be black. But, machine sewing the lining to the crocheted fabric, creating a channel for the drawstring and adding the baubles at the ends of the chord would  still take me another two weeks.

With extreme satisfaction, on June 30th I completed my final stitches. I was so excited with my creation that I decided to share a closer look at some of the details with all of you. First and for most, it is important that you understand that in my design I express my wildest expectations that Harry and Hermione could have been a couple. That is why I chose the inside lining to be gold; representing Harry's golden snitch. By putting a little bit of Harry into Hermione's bag, I can keep Harry and Hermione together forever (at least in my mind...)! Hope you enjoy sharing this little crafty adventure with me!

P.S.  There are many versions of this bag all over the internet, including images of the one made for the film.  I have not included them here to avoid copyright infringement, but feel free to look around and compare if you wish. I include links to sites that most influenced my work here:

Many years ago I discovered that there was a crafty side to me. Since then, there have even been times when I have considered taking up crafting as a full time job. But, I guess that is something I have heard most people who practice some craft say.  Someday... one day... Until then...  I guess I'll just blog about it. Thanks for being part of the crafty side of my life!
