National Hispanic Heritage Month 2020 ... includes a link to latin themed crochet projects

Christina Corujo describes National Hispanic Heritage Month in her article on nbcnewyork.com . In her article she states "It's a national celebration to honor the history, culture and influence of past generations who came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America." National Hispanic Heritage Month was officially designating in 1988 by President Reagan as the 30-day period starting on Sept. 15 and extending to Oct. 15 .
For Puerto Ricans living on the island of Puerto Rico, celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month is not a tradition. This could be due to the fact that these national celebrations are instituted to honor or remember customs and historical occurrences that have been undermined. But even though Puerto Ricans have assimilated many US customs and traditions since becoming a US commonwealth in 1952, our Hispanic traditions are still ingrained in our spirits. Due to this, I believe, we do not feel the need to be reminded that we are a Hispanic culture.

Even so, I have chosen to participate in this celebration this year as a means to share with others the beauty of our culture as well as to commemorate diversity and promote tolerance and acceptance. Needless to say, I have chosen to do so through my crafting.

There are many ways you can use this theme to provoke important and critical conversations in your family about the influence that Hispanic/Latin cultures have had on the US. You could discuss in your family circle the possibility of
  • donating to a Hispanic charity.
  • instituting a weekly Hispanic food day in which you cook/eat foods from any Hispanic country.
  • celebrating a Hispanic tradition that is new to your family.
  • learning about an influential Hispanic who has made a positive impact on society.

Of course, you could also consider making up one of my free patterns for this month. You can find my King of Fruits Bathroom Tissue Cozy  and my Coquí Taíno Wall hanging here!

To work with ones hands is to be a laborer; to work with ones hands and brain is to be a craftsman; but to work with ones hands, brain and heart is to be an artist. - Louis Nizer

    About me:
    Caroline Rodriguez

Many years ago I discovered that there was a crafty side to me. Since then, there have even been times when I have considered taking up crafting as a full time job. But, I guess that is something I have heard most people who practice some craft say.  Someday... one day... Until then...  I guess I'll just blog about it. Thanks for being part of the crafty side of my life!
